Advantage Of Laparoscopic Hernia Repair Surgery Over Open Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery- the most recommended surgery for Hernia treatment

There are two techniques used for hernia repair- traditional open surgery and laparoscopic surgery. The laparoscopic method originated in the 1990s and is the preferred method at present in India. Many hospitals specialize in laparoscopic surgery and we are one of them. Varanasi hospital is one of the best laparoscopic surgery hospitals in India for hernia treatment.

A hernia is when an organ comes out through a small open or weak spots such as a groin, abdomen, belly button or upper stomach. A surgery is usually done to treat a hernia, it does not get better on its own. It again depends on the size, location, and symptoms of a hernia.

Laparoscopic surgery popularly known as key-hole surgery is the newest technology. Laparoscopic hernia repair is a technique using 2 to 3 small incisions in the abdomen using a general anesthesia. There are many advantages of undergoing a laparoscopic surgery. They are less post-operative pain and earlier return to work to resume daily routine. This method is costlier as it requires advanced laparoscopic equipment. Patients can return to normal activities within one to two weeks. Surgery lasts longer, approximately 45 to 60 minutes in length. Patients bear little higher costs in this case due to the use of additional laparoscopic equipment.

The open surgery also called conventional surgery, on the other hand, is the most common and oldest technique used for hernia repair. It is operated through one large incision in the groin or bikini area using a local anesthesia with sedation. This surgery is easily operated in case of largest and most complex hernias. The surgery is cost-effective as this process requires standard surgical equipment. Most surgeons prefer this method as no advanced training is required here. Patients can return to normal activities within one to three weeks. Surgery lasts for about 30 to 45 minutes.

In both open and laparoscopic surgeries, a mesh is placed to cover the hole made while operating. But a laparoscopic surgery is more advantageous in the following cases:

  • In case of a previously done failed open repair.
  • In case of a bilateral hernia.
  • in case of a smaller and less complicated hernia.

Therefore, it can be assumed that no one method is suitable for every patient. It varies from case to case as mentioned above. After looking into the type and position of a hernia, the best possible method is recommended. Surgeons prefer to perform the operation using the newest technology for a patient’s convenience.
