Can Constipation Cause Hernia? Is Hernia Surgery The Only Reliable Treatment?

Can Constipation Cause Hernia? Is Hernia Surgery The Only Reliable Treatment?

Did you know chronic constipation can cause hernia? As we all know, a hernia is bulging of an organ or tissue (mostly in abdomen or groin area) through an abnormal opening. This protrusion cannot be pushed back even with the aid of hernia belts and the only reliable treatment available for the patient is hernia surgery or medically known as herniorrhaphy.

Now, how chronic constipation causes a hernia? Constipation means not having a proper bowel movement. In order to have a proper bowel movement, many people do excessive straining in the toilet which can result in a hernia. It’s not just constipation, any activity that puts   pressure on your abdominal wall can cause a hernia. For instance, chronic coughing and lifting heavy weights constantly might cause a hernia. Even certain injuries contribute to the cause of hernia.

So, how to prevent constipation to avoid a hernia? The answer lies below.

• Drink plenty of water
• Eat a fibre-rich diet (that contains fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, pulses, etc.)
• Exercise every alternate day
• Do not ignore a bowel movement
• Avoid overstraining in the toilet.

Like we said in the introduction of the blog, hernias cannot be pushed back and can only be treated with hernia repair surgery. At Varanasi Hospital, we provide both general and laparoscopic hernia operation to the patients. Our expert laparoscopic surgeon in Varanasi, Dr Manish Jindal has an experience of more than 10 years in laparoscopic surgeries. Since laparoscopic surgical procedures are minimally-invasive and allows faster recovery than general hernia repair surgery, it is highly recommended by medical professionals.

If you’re in need of affordable hernia treatment, visit Varanasi Hospital, one of the best hospitals in Varanasi.

Hiatal Hernia: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, And Treatment

Hiatal Hernia: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, And Treatment

In case of hiatal hernia, the topmost portion of the stomach protrudes to the chest through hiatus, the diaphragm’s opening. Hiatal hernia further results in GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) and the risk of developing hiatal hernia is higher for people who are old and suffering from obesity.

Also read: Patient’s Guide To Understand Everything About Hernia & Its Treatment.

Symptoms of Hiatal Hernia

Several symptoms are associated with hiatal hernia. They are as mentioned below:

1. Pain and burning in the chest.
2. Shortness of breath.
3. Regurgitation of food or fluids.
4. Vomiting.
5. Bloating.
6. Burping.
7. Acid reflux.
8. Heartburn.
9. Unpleasant taste in the mouth.
10. Abdominal pain.
11. Difficulty in swallowing.

Causes for Hiatal Hernia

What might be the causes behind developing hiatal hernia? The primary reason is increased pressure in the abdominal cavity due to several reasons, let’s find out those reasons and other causes responsible for hiatal hernia.

• Changes in the diaphragm
• Heavy lifting
• Constant Coughing
• Pregnancy
• Chronic Straining due to Constipation
• Heavy lifting
• Injury or trauma to the area.

Diagnosis for Hiatal Hernia

Let’s look into the diagnostic tests done for hiatal hernia.

Barium X-Ray

In this diagnostic procedure, the patient is required to drink a liquid with barium (a chemical element) which coats the upper GI (Gastrointestinal) tract so that the doctors can have a better look at the esophagus and stomach.

Upper GI Endoscopy

The medical professionals can also prescribe endoscopy to view the upper GI tract for diagnosing hiatal hernia. For endoscopy, the doctor inserts a long and thin tube called an endoscope inside the throat to properly diagnose the esophagus and stomach for any inflammation.

Esophageal Manometry

Esophageal manometry is recommended to test the esophageal pressure while swallowing. It also helps in measuring the force and coordination of the esophageal muscles.

Treatment for Hiatal Hernia

If your hiatal hernia makes you suffer from acid reflux and heartburn, then you’ll be prescribed antacids and other medications to curb those symptoms. Open hernia surgery or laparoscopic surgery can also be prescribed by the doctor if the hiatal hernia deteriorates and the medicines do not work.

If your hiatal hernia requires surgery, then visit Varanasi Hospital, the best hospital in Varanasi for affordable hernia treatment.

Why Choose Winter Months For Any Surgical Treatment

Why Choose Winter Months For Any Surgical Treatment

The holy city of Varanasi becomes more beautiful during the months of winter. With beautiful walks to the ghats, listening to mind-soothing Ganga aartis, Varanasi people surely knows how to enjoy winter. But did you know that the cooler months can also prove to be the best time for your operation?

Although there’s no specific time for performing operations, winter season is preferred by a good number of patients for any surgical treatment and even piercings.

Whether it’s general or laparoscopic surgery, the doctors prescribe the surgical procedure by taking certain parameters like the patient’s case history, his or her current condition, and other things into account.

Today, we are sharing with you a few reasons why you should consider cool winter months for your surgical treatment.

No Summer-related Problems

Summers in Varanasi are not so compassionate, as we have dry and humid summers, and we face strong and dry summer winds (called loo). Also, sunstrokes and heatstrokes are common summer problems faced by us.

Little To Moderate Sun Exposure

We often get our daily dose of Vitamin D during winters because the winter sun is warm and it has fewer chances of burning our skin. Surgical wounds are more likely to heal slower during summers as overexposure to the sun rays affects the healing of wounds. Surgical scars and wound heal more quickly during winter months.

Low Temperatures

Winters mean colder months and as we know, low temperatures amplify the healing and recovery process post-surgery. Not everyone has access to air-conditioning system and that makes winter season an ideal time for availing a surgery.

Better Protection To The Surgical Wounds

In winters, we wrap our bodies with multiple layers to feel warm. This also works well for surgical incisions as less expose our surgical wounds during winters without feeling hot, thus providing better protection to the post-surgical scars.

Starting The New Year With Good Health

A surgical procedure is overwhelming for the patient. If you have your laparoscopic surgery done during winters, of course, you’ll heal in no time and can welcome the new year with a big smile.

Happy And Enjoyable Summer

Getting your surgery performed during the cold season is best because it will let you enjoy your summer season without any trouble. Since you have dedicated the entire winter season for your post-surgery recovery, you do not have to worry about any surgery-related issues in summers.

An important thing to note is that just because winter season is considerable better for surgical treatment, it does not mean you should wait till winters in case of an urgent requirement for surgery. If you’re looking for a good hospital to get your surgical treatment, consider Varanasi Hospital as your preferred option. We specialize in laparoscopic surgeries and we have one of the best laparoscopic surgeons in our team. Till then, enjoy the upcoming months of winter.

Patient’s Guide To Understand Everything About Hernia & Its Treatment

Patient’s Guide To Understand Everything About Hernia & Its Treatment

A hernia is a very common medical condition that thankfully can also be treated very effectively with hernia surgery. Here, we have answered the common questions asked by people in the simplest way.

What is Hernia?

A hernia is the abnormal swelling generally found in the abdomen or groin area. It occurs when fatty tissues compress and make their way through a weak spot or opening in a muscle wall.

What are the symptoms of Hernia?

Mostly hernia is just a bump that initially causes no discomfort or pain to the patient. The first and foremost symptom to look for is a bulge in the problem area. Look for other symptoms like pain in the affected area while coughing and lifting something, having heavy stomach, burning sensation around the bulge. Severe symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and heartburn.

What are the causes of hernia?

The common causes of hernia are as following:
• Poor nutrition
• Being overweight or obese
• Smoking, as it weakens muscles
• Chronic constipation
• Chronic cough and sneezing
• Lifting heavyweights
• Enlarged prostate
• Genetics

What are the different types of Hernia?

There are different types of hernia. Some of them are as follows:
1. Inguinal hernia: Occurs in the groin.
2. Umbilical hernia- Soft painless swelling near the (mostly baby’s) navel.
3. Hiatal hernia: The upper part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm. It mostly happens in old and overweight people.
4. Incisional hernia: Happens when a past abdominal surgery’s wound does not heal properly.

How hernia is treated?

The only permanent treatment available for hernia is surgery. The two preferred methods for operating hernia include open hernia surgery and laparoscopic hernia operation. The surgical method depends upon the individual’s case.

Which surgical method would be the best for treating hernia?

An open hernia surgery causes a permanent scar in the affected area and it takes longer to heal the surgical wound. It is sometimes suggested for people having a hernia either very large in size or if it has been left untreated for long.

Laparoscopic hernia surgery which is also known as keyhole hernia surgery or a microscopic hernia operation causes less complications and pain than an open procedure. This surgical method gives no scar, reduces the chance of getting infections, requires less hospital stay and speedy recovery. Laparoscopic surgery offers numerous benefits like shorter hospital stay and faster recovery and so on. Thus, it is preferred by most patients seeking hernia surgery.

How can hernia be prevented?

A hernia can be prevented by adopting a few required changes in our lifestyle. The tips for preventing hernia are as follows:

– Don’t carry heavyweights, or do it with caution.
– Quit smoking.
– Maintain healthy body weight.
– Do the right exercise.
– Avoid constipation.
– Maintain good body posture.
– Eat fiber-rich foods.
– Stop overexertion.

We hope all your queries about hernia are answered. Do not try to treat hernia on your own. A hernia does not go away on its own, it can only be treated surgically by medical practitioners. For more information, get in touch with us at Varanasi Hospitals.

Hernia –A Brief Introduction To Its Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

Hernia –A Brief Introduction To Its Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

Hernia is a medical condition which is a common problem these days, and can be characterized by a visible bulge in the abdomen or groin. A weakness, tear or hole in the peritoneum, the muscular wall that keeps the abdominal organs in place, is the reason for the occurrence of hernia. This defect in the peritoneum allows organs and tissues to push through, and thus produces a bulge, leading to the condition known as hernia. It is often and pain-free, but at times it can bring discomfort and pain, if left untreated for long. The lump may disappear as it is pushed back into the cavity, when the person lies down, but coughing or straining activities can make it reappear. Hernia surgery is the permanent solution to this problem. Let’s understand more about it, in details.

Causes Of Hernia

A hernia can be commonly found in the areas of the natural openings in the groin, or near the belly button, but it can also occur through a previous surgical scar. It occurs more commonly in women than men, due to pregnancy and childbirth. The risk of hernia also increases with age, as the abdominal muscle starts to become weak. Children can develop hernia, rarely, unless it is congenital meaning, it is present at birth. However, vigorous activities and certain medical problems can also increase pressure on the abdominal wall and can lead to a hernia. Some other common risk factors for hernia include

• Straining on the toilet due to long-term constipation.
• Persistent cough or sneezing which exerts pressure on the abdomen.
• Cystic fibrosis that damages the lining of the lungs and digestive system
• Poor nutrition which can weaken the abdominal muscles
• Long term smoking that affect the immune system of the body.
• Physical exertion that build abdominal pressure.

Symptoms Of Hernia

Discomfort and pain are the main symptoms of hernia. These symptoms often becomes worse, while standing, straining, or lifting heavy items. In case of babies, visible pain and more prominent bulge while crying are the only symptoms associated with the same. In many cases, the hernia is no more than a painless swelling that doesn’t create any problem at all and posses no immediate medical threats. Thus, people does not seek hernia surgery immediately. But it is crucial to seek surgical remedy as it is the only reliable treatment option.

But people with severe swelling and soreness should see a doctor soon. Immediate hernia surgery is needed in cases when part of the gut becomes obstructed or strangulated by an inguinal hernia leading severe symptoms such as pain, nausea, vomiting.

Treatment Of Hernia

There are two main types of hernia surgery:

1. Open Surgery:

The hernia is repaired by making a large incision across the abdomen or the pelvic region. It is then, closed using sutures, mesh, or both, and the surgical wound in the skin is closed with sutures, staples, or surgical glue.

2. Laparoscopic Surgery (keyhole surgery):

The hernia is repaired in the same way as in open surgery but is done through 4-5 minute incisions near in the abdomen. Laparoscopic surgery enables faster recovery along with many other advantages over open surgery.

Varanasi Hospitals offers both open and laparoscopic hernia surgery. Seek consultation, if you are having symptoms of the same.

A Brief Introduction To Types of Hernia

A Brief Introduction To Types of Hernia

Hernia surgery is one of the most common surgeries performed by doctors. So if you want to undergo hernia surgery, you can look for the best hospitals in Varanasi. But before the surgery or even before you go to the doctor, you should know about the types of hernia and their symptoms, to help you identify your hernia.

An organ or a tissue, when breaks through a hole in the muscle, forms hernia. It takes some time before it starts bulging or becomes prominent, painful and irritating. Based on the location, there are several types of hernia.

• Inguinal Hernia:

This kind of hernia mainly occurs due to protruding of a part of the intestine through a weak spot of abdominal muscle. It can occur not only in adults but in kids and infants too. It is not particularly dangerous, but if the swelling gets bigger or painful, immediate surgery is the best option.

• Femoral Hernia:

This type of hernia develops mostly in pregnant or obese women. It appears in the upper part of the thigh or groin when the intestine enters the canal carrying the femoral artery. Stomach aches, and vomiting are the prime symptoms of this type of hernia.

• Umbilical Hernia:

The umbilical hernia is often found in newborn babies. In this hernia, some portion of the small intestine pushes out through the stomach from the navel. In infants, it closes up by the time they turn 1 year old. In adults, the cause of umbilical hernia is mostly obesity, pregnancy, chronic cough, chronic constipation, etc.

• Incisional Hernia:

It occurs mostly post abdominal surgery, particularly those who are elderly or overweight, and lead inactive lifestyle. In this type, the intestine pushes vertically along an incision. This can be really painful and operating on a previous spot can be dangerous and only the best hernia surgeons can handle it well. It is best to avoid this type of hernia by staying active after surgery.

• Epigastric Hernia:

An Epigastric hernia happens when fat pushes through a feeble piece of the abdominal wall. It happens amidst the belly between the breastbone and the belly button, or navel. More often these hernias are small and you can have more than one, at a time. These hernias don’t have any symptoms except pain in the upper belly.

• Hiatal Hernia:

A Hiatal hernia is unique in relation to different kinds of hernias since it protrudes from the chest. It happens when part of your stomach lumps up through your stomach and into your chest. You can’t feel a Hiatal hernia or see a lump in the early stages. But it can be felt by repeated acid reflux.

If you have any type of hernia mentioned above, it is best to not delay and look for the best hospital for hernia surgery.

Which is better for Hernia: Open V/S Laparoscopic Surgery

Which is better for Hernia: Open V/S Laparoscopic Surgery

The hernia has become a fairly common problem these days. Today, 1 out of 3 people have the problem of hernia. Most of the time, people tend to ignore hernia unless it becomes a major risk later on, due to complications. It is not wise to ignore a hernia, and the best solution for treatment is surgery. There are two widely popular ways of surgery. One way is open hernia surgery, and the other way is Laparoscopic hernia surgery. There is always some confusion in patients on which surgery to choose. Some doctors recommend open and some recommend a laparoscopic approach. Let’s discuss them both in detail.

The first and foremost thing to know is how are these two kinds of surgery are performed. Both types of surgeries have their own way, advantages, and limitations. A mesh is also used in many cases to repair a hernia and also to avoid the recurrence of the hernia.

As the name suggests, open surgery is done by, opening the abdomen. One big incision across the abdomen is made, through which the doctor put the organs in its original positions and place the mesh to avoid its recurrence. In Laparoscopic surgery, 3-4 small incisions are made through which the surgery is carried out using the help of a machine and mesh is spread, if required.

In Laparoscopic hernia operation, since the incisions are small, the recovery time of a hernia patient is about 2 weeks. Even the pain felt by the patient is far less by this approach than the pain felt by a patient of open hernia surgery. Often the recovery time for open surgery is much more which is about 4-6 weeks (or even more).

Laparoscopic surgery is a much more advanced procedure that has been practiced, on such a large scale only in the last 20-30 years. So it is essential to keep in mind that if you opt for Laparoscopic hernia surgery, find a doctor who has a lot of experiences or who is an expert laparoscopic surgeon.

For some people, general anesthesia can be unbearable which is necessary for laparoscopy. For them, the doctors recommend open surgery using local anesthesia. Many people prefer open surgery due to more cost of laparoscopic surgery. However, as the patient makes faster recovery and needs to spend much less time in hospitals and medicines, often this approach proves to be a smart economic decision.

Whichever approach you wish to choose, finding the best surgeon is most important, especially for Laparoscopic Hernia Operation. At Varanasi Hospital, we offer hernia surgery using both approaches after evaluating the most suitable process.

FAQ’s On Mesh In Hernia Repair Surgery By Patients

FAQ’s On Mesh In Hernia Repair Surgery By Patients

Hernia surgery can be done in two ways, open surgery and laparoscopic surgery. As there are different kinds of hernia, a surgeon might take different approaches to repair the hernia effectively. However, almost every expert doctor prefers laparoscopic hernia surgery for ensuring the maximum benefits of the patient.

Nowadays, ‘Hernia Mesh’ is a product commonly used in hernia repairs. Surgical meshes, in particular, the ones used to repair hernias, have been in use since 1891. Yet there are many doubts regarding the same, till this day.

Today, on behalf of Varanasi Hospital, we answer some frequently asked questions about mesh in hernia repair surgery.

What Is a ‘Mesh’?

Surgical mesh is a medical instrument that is used to provide extra support to the weakened tissue or damaged tissue. The mesh looks like a flat, grid-like structure which is mainly used to cover the hernia surgery incision. There are two types of mesh, which are made from either synthetic material and animal tissue. The surgeon decides which type, depending from case to case.

How Does It Work?

Mesh fortifies the tissue around the hernia. Surgeons joint the mesh or staple them after repairing the hernia. Over time the tissues grow around the mesh and secure the repair, mitigating the recurrence of hernia in the future.

Does Hernia Surgery Require A Mesh?

A hernia can be repaired without a mesh if it’s a small one. Mainly a small can be repaired with just a suture. However, if hernia left untreated, it often grows over time, which cannot be treated with the only suture. Then it often requires a surgical mesh for a successful repair.

What Are The Advantages Of Using Mesh?

Previously, the hernia used to be repaired with suturing, quite successfully. But in many cases hernia recurred again and again, as the incision acts as a weak spot in the abdomen. But the usage of hernia mesh in surgery has changed that for good. It minimized the risk of the hernia recurrence.

Will It Cause Any Problem In The Future?

Surgical mesh is a foreign body, which is being placed in your body through hernia surgery. After surgery, it may get contaminated and cause swelling, redness, and irritation. But it has been found that mesh infection mostly occurs due to the usage of low-quality mesh. The best hospital, on the other hand, provide the best quality surgical mesh and lowers the chances of any such infection.

When a Mesh Is Required, Which Will Be The Best Surgery Procedure?

It depends on the patient’s condition and the doctor’s recommendation. However, experts surgeons, mostly prefer laparoscopic surgery, as it provides quick recovery without any complications.

Hope we helped you with our answers. We will be back soon, with more questions regarding surgical mesh, so stay tuned for the next part.

Reasons Why Hernia Is Closely Associated With Motherhood

Reasons Why Hernia Is Closely Associated With Motherhood

As we are observing Mother’s day this month, we are sending our tributes to all mothers’ along with spreading more awareness on hernia, a condition mothers mostly suffer after and before childbirth.

A hernia is a medical condition, which happens when a portion of an internal organ budges out through an abdominal opening. A hernia is very common amongst both men and women. However, pregnant women are highly susceptible to it. Thankfully, this condition can be resolved through hernia surgery.

Though hernia may not show any symptoms, often it can be found to be very painful for certain individuals. Let’s get to know how hernia is associated with motherhood.

During Pregnancy:

During pregnancy as your belly grows and stretches, the pressure on the abdominal wall starts to increase. Your abdomen gets pressurized significantly as it needs to carry the baby’s weight. Thus, the abdominal tissues get weaken due to immense load and it tears apart the membrane, making a hernia bulge out.

Who’s At Risk?

All pregnant women are at risk, but during pregnancy, the risk of hernia gets even more obvious, such as-

1. If you are expecting twins or more.

2. If you are obese or overweight.

3. If you had abdominal surgery previously.

4. If you had a previous C-section

During Childbirth:

If you diagnosed with a hernia during pregnancy, the doctor may suggest a C-section. This is done because, during normal delivery, a hernia can budge out, while the mother needs to put a lot of pressure on their abdomen to push out the baby. Though it is rare, this condition may arise.

Does It Hurt The Baby?

No, the baby won’t get hurt by the hernia as he/she grows up in the uterus. But you need to consult with your doctor immediately if hernia occurs in this condition.

After Pregnancy:

After childbirth, umbilical hernia is common amongst mothers’. It may show up soon after childbirth or even many years later. Due to the extreme stretchiness of the abdomen during pregnancy, the muscles won’t join fully even after birth, and may cause an umbilical hernia in the future.

Though every mother is at the risk of having a hernia in the future after childbirth, several factors might uplift the chances even more, such as

1. Being Obese or overweight.

2. Coughing and sneezing too often.

3. Heavy weight lifting or carrying loads.

4. Having any Previous abdominal surgery.

If you feel a soft lump in your abdominal or groin area during or after your pregnancy, you need to consult a doctor immediately. If left untreated, it can cut off the blood supply, damaging your intestines. Thankfully, hernia surgery can resolve hernia permanently.

Varanasi Hospital wishes all mothers’ a Happy Mother’s Day. Stay safe and keep your baby safe!
