Role Of Mesh in Hernia Repair Surgery

Even though a hernia is not a life threatening illness, it surely affects the quality of life to a significant extent. Not only it limits the mobility and activities of the individual, but it also challenges their mental well being. The laparoscopic hernia operation is considered as the best treatment option yet. Though has been in existence for quite some time, its effectivity increased significantly, after the usage of surgical mesh was included.

Several factors are to be considered before finalizing the mesh. These factors are namely, the pore size, material, filament type, dissolvability and similar features.

At first, the only meshes available in the market was made out of animal tissues. But later, around 1960s, came the synthetic meshes. Earlier the idea was not accepted widely, fearing infection and other complications. But after a few trials, the results were found to be exceedingly good and thus, the use of surgical mesh became extremely prevalent.

Most of these meshes were made up of either of PP, PTFE, ePTFE, and POL (Polyester). Despite their difference in their chemical composition, these materials are strong, flexible, can easily be cut and integrated among its surrounding tissue with minimal chances of infection.

They possess large pores to promote fibrovascular growth. Also, their property ensures that it does not adhere any oil, or water on its surface. If proper caution is not exercised, it might cause certain problems such as infection and inflammation. Also, in few rare cases, it has been found that the due to the usage of the improper mesh has resulted in infection, clogging of tissue and other severe complications which ultimately led to another surgical intervention, involving removing the mesh itself.

However. The count of such cases are extremely rare, and the people, in general, are receiving enormous benefits from the surgical meshes, both in term of recovery and by reducing the chances of a hernia recurrence.

In a nutshell, the surgical mesh should be strong, biocompatible, noninfectious, and non-immunogenic in general. The exact type of surgical mesh can vary depending upon the particular case and the type of laparoscopic hernia operation that has been carried out. Nowadays, most of the laparoscopic hernia operation is carried out along with the application of a surgical mesh with it.

It is particularly helpful for those people whose bodies are not likely to facilitate healthy regrowth as quickly as desired from the perspective of medical health.
